Esialgse seisuga on endiselt töökorras näiteks Swedbanka sisse logimine, samas on puudutatud näiteks pilet.ee ja ka eesti.ee. Kui siiski on tahtmine ka neisse sisse logida, siis on võimalik Firefoxile öelda, et konkreetsete lehekülgede puhul tuleb võimalikku ohtu ignoreeerida.

First, you’re not supposed to remove the reader while operating system is running. It completely freezes kernel, it doesn’t panic but nothing responds either. Not even the magic REISUB sequence.

Second, it polls really often. Powertop reports about 80-90 wakeups for [kernel core] cm4040_do_poll (cm4040_do_poll). That’s more than you want for something that doesn’t have to be super-responsive and that you don’t use most of the time. Apparently having the source code of the driver it’s easy to fix. Now, if you’re familiar with drivers then what I’m going to suggest is probably not a proper but rather a hack fix but it has the advantage of working . So in the driver code there’s a line which reads:

#define POLL_PERIOD msecs_to_jiffies(10)

I simply edited it to read:

#define POLL_PERIOD msecs_to_jiffies(250)

Any bigger value like 500 made the reader less responsive than I considered reasonable. With that value Powertop now reports 4 wakeups which is indeed roughly 25 times less and only about 1.3% of wakeups with few other apps running.

I was getting tired of having smartcard reader that connects to USB, the wire is absolutely annoying and it’s so easy to forget it at home when leaving. So I bought an Omnikey 4040 that connects to PCMCIA. First try was fail, Flex computer shop sold me wrong reader and I didn’t notice until I got home. They were totally fine to replace it though .

Next I tried setting it up. Another fail. There seems to be a kernel driver which didn’t work. I then filed a support request with HID Global Corporation. Two weeks later they sent me driver code that compiles for my kernel (2.6.32) and works too.

I then put it to another test. Tried to sign a document with new still in development phase id-card software from Smartlink. Signing hanged application. Oh, well, it’s not announced stable anyway. However web-based signing actually worked with a website that is known to be tricky.

When you look at the picture you’ll notice that id-card software warns that the site isn’t using up-to-date API when accessing card and you’ll also see that the document signed is wrong, I only signed a local txt file. But, it actually works on linux and quite well, which is awesome!

Edit: Correction: It didn’t really hang, it just takes longer than expected to respond .

Nüüd siis korraldatakse asi ümber ja rõhutatakse võimalust registreerida teise taseme domeen ka eraisikuna. Kõlab hästi, aga pole kasutatav lahendus. merike.ee on juba registreeritud ja pole mulle sellega enam kättesaadav, muukujulised nimemuudatused muudaksid nime juba oluliselt rohkem.

Loomulikult saaksin jätkata praeguse domeeni kasutamist. Selle juures on vähemalt kaks totakat aspekti. Esiteks olukord, kus kolmanda taseme domeeni eest küsitakse sama palju raha kui teise taseme domeeni eest. No ei ole kuskilt otsast loogiline. Domeeninime puhul on selle pikkus väga oluline näitaja mugavuse hindamisel ja kolmanda taseme domeeninimi on pikem. Teiseks tõsisasi, et hinnaklass on säärane, et peaksin nime eest maksma 307,50 (Zone hind), kuigi hetkel maksan majutuse eest samal perioodil 400 krooni. Nimeserveri teenuse pakkumisest tekkiv koormus ühe nime kohta on ikka kõvasti väiksem kui koormus samale nimele majutuse pakkumise eest, hind ei kajasta seda sugugi. Segane on minu jaoks hetkel see, kas pri.ee domeeni ümber registreerimisel tuleb välja vahetada ka majutaja või oleks võimalik ka ainult domeeninime registreerija vahetus ning jätkamine praeguse majutaja juures, kes hetkel veel EIS akrediteeritute hulgas ei ole. Majutaja välja vahetamisel kaasneks vähemalt Zone puhul oluline hinnatõus majutuskulude osas.

Olgu see uus kord korraldajate arvates kui innovaatiline tahes, aga hetkel tundub küll, et mul jääb patriotismist väheks ja tuleb välja mõelda .net, .info vms nimi, millele kolida. Kusjuures merike.net on kinni.

Mul ei ole vaja .ee tippdomeeni, mul ei ole vaja 99,9% uptime’i. Tahan, et nimi oleks suunatud ja majutaja poolne kvaliteet selline, et teenus on suuresti kättesaadav ja töötav. Ja ma ei taha selle eest ebaratsionaalselt palju maksta nagu praegu eeldatakse. Tegemist on siiski isikliku domeeniga, mis kasumit ei tooda ja vajalik oma mõtete väljendamiseks ja erinevateks veebitehnoloogiatega seotud katsetusteks.

Ühtlasi ei tahaks ma nime muuta, sest see lõhub ära praegusele aadressile suunavad juhuslikud lingid ja kasutajate järjehoidjad. Kui telefoninumbri muutmisel on võimalus kõik tuttavad läbi helistada ja neile uus number öelda ning numbri avalikku kataloogi lubamisega ka ülejäänud maailmale jätta võimalus kontakti leidmiseks, siis domeeninimega on paraku olukord keerulisem. Domeeni külastajad ei ole selle omanikule teada, s.t puudub võimalus edastada teavet aadressimuutusest neile, kes 6-kuulise üleminekuperioodi jooksul lehte ei külasta. See on inetu, aga paistab, et sunniviisiline.

Olen rahulolematu ja ei nõustu uue korra innovaatilisusega.

That reminded me of a picture I have of the memorial in Stockholm. Before I went to look it up in my photo album, I did a Google image search. The first picture on results page was from mereblog.com, site I don’t think I’ve visited before. To my surprise one picture used there and the one found in Google search is from 7is7.com, web page of Otto, active Mozilla contributor from Estonia. Odd. Not the picture or the taker but that I arrived there doing a random search. Perhaps randomness hard to reach is not only an issue in computer science but also in life in general.

The picture itself is another story. After 11th grade I got to participate in an award trip to Sweden with other more-successful-than-average students. After having visited Vaasa museum I was walking around the place as I had some extra time. I didn’t know where the memorial was as nobody had told us it’s nearby so it caught me by surprise when I suddenly realised I had just walked into it (it’s three stone walls in a triangle-like shape). Didn’t have much time, but managed to shoot one picture still, text is completely unreadable though.

As it didn’t hibernate again last night I went for shutdown. All seemed fine. My first boot this morning was to Kubuntu, check email, hibernate, done. The second boot was into Windows 7 because TTCN-3 tool I need for class only works in Windows. Still all good, working, applying Windows updates, reboot, shutdown.

And then I booted to Kubuntu again. Whole networking system was down. Right-clicking network manager reveals “Networking disabled”. iwl3945 driver does some tricks at times, so I unload and reload that driver. Nothing. Iwconfig. No interface. Ifconfig. Nothing except lo. Ok, so I have a laptop that does no networking at all and I have no idea what’s wrong. Sure, this is a beta, but first reboot after last updates worked fine.

This time booting with live version on USB. Short search on Google suggests that /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state might have NetworkingEnabled set to false. To my surprse this is exactly the case. Set to true, restart network manager and it’s all working again.

What I don’t understand is how the heck did it get set to false first place?

Oh, and does anybody know where screwdrivers like to hide? I had one around and can’t find it any more. If you’re Kadri then no, it’s not the one I borrowed from you, it’s the other one.

495020 – Ma loen pidevalt Thunderbrdis meile selles kaustade vaates, kus kuvatakse ainult need kaustad, kus lugemata poste on. Ja kui keset postituse lugemist muutub iseenesest aktiivseks teine kaust ja loetav materjal kaob eest ära, siis ei ole väga tore. Tundub, et kuigi püsisin mõnda aega beeta-liini peal, siis nüüd on kiusatus uuesti arendusversiooni kasutama hakata. Pealegi pole ükski senistest arendusversioonidest ühegi suurema prohmakaga toime tulnud. Teatav tagavarakoopia on muidugi abiks riskide maandamisel .

Ja viimaks 167951, millega Firefox sai omale tekstilahtrid, mida saab oma suva järgi suuremaks venitada, kui arvamus piisava suurusega kastist ei lähe kokku veebimeistri omaga. Ka see uuendus on hetkel arendusversioonis nagu eelminegi.

Kõige lõppu veel kaks prototüübi tasemel katsetust:
* Contacts ehk kontaktid brauseris. Esialgu piiratud teenuste toega ja mitte millegagi integreeruv, aga kujutate ette sama asja enamlevinud teenuste toe ja Thunderbirdi integratsiooniga?
* Account manager – idee sellest vaatevinklist, et erinevatel veebilehtedel sisse-välja logimine on nii tavaline nähtus, et sellega peaks üks korralik veebilehitseja ilma lisadeta sujuvalt toime tulema. Või siis sellest, et su brauser saab aru, et andsid sülearvuti parajasti sõbrale ja tahad korraga kõigil veebilehtedel välja logida.

After a little more than a year of calendar translations and some months of Mozmill tests for calendar I was invited to attend this really nice event.

At this point I have to thank Clint Talbert who confessed dropping my name. Sadly he couldn’t come himself.

Given the number of interesting talks I really wish I could’ve split myself into three or so: two for talks and one for socializing . Nevertheless met all those nice people I’ve communicated with via IRC so far and of course some more great Mozillians.

Noting down here some afterthoughts:

• Listening to Gandalf’s talk made me realize that it would be really nice to have a Mozilla Communities site for Estonian translation instead of two separate and rather inactive sites currently live. Not sure if this fits into busy everyday agenda any time soon. Maybe it might fit into Sander’s (thinking out loud here ).
• L20n is going to very useful for languages like Estonian bringing localization flexibility without burdening native English developers with all the details. I once mistakenly thought it can’t be but Mozilla is obviously bending borders with it as with many other newer technologies like native ogg support, multitouch and accelerometers support in browser.
• SUMO talk. Sort of got me interested. Anyone willing to step in and localize some of the most popular articles?

From the quirkier side of this world:

• A man at the airport’s bus stop speaking English, Russian, some languages I don’t know and knowing some Estonian words. Saying that it’s cold compared to India. I’m still wondering if he had just arrived from there or so.
• Internet access at Andel’s hotel. “Internet access is 100% FREE but strangely, to go online, you must first choose a pricing plan then choose a number of units and then press on “Submit”. That will connect you to the internet.” Talk about usability.
• A must have link in a Mozcamp post – Chris Hofmann parodizing Steve ballmer.
• Facebook acting up entire time, continuously hanging my Windows session before loading up. I guess that was the collision of open and proprietary?
• Yellow penguins seen on the boat trip

Calendar team

Finishing up with a picture I didn’t miss as I was most likely checking out at the time this was taken on. Oh, and of course, thanks to both William and Irina for organizing the event!
